September 5th:
For the first few days of school I kind of just sat in the library waiting around because nobody came to me for any uniforms. I guess that was kind of a good thing because it meant everybody was in there uniform. In these past two days I have had 5 students come to me for uniforms and it felt good to help them out and keep them out of inside. Yesterday morning I went and introduced myself to Mr. Wosleger and let him know about my capstone telling him if he had any students who needed a uniform to go back to class that he could find me and I would be able to give them a uniform to get them back to class. Then we started just talking. We were talking about how we lived in the same town, sports, how I know his son because he used to work for my Dad, and some more random stuff. He must have liked me because when I got home last night my parents were asking me about it saying he texted his son Austin about how good of an impression I made on him who told my dad and this morning, Mrs. Boutilier talked to me about it too.
September 6th:
Today I got to school and my friend devin was in the parking lot and asked me if I had an extra tie on me and then I told him about my capstone and to come and find me in the library. He came in and said I was a lifesaver. A few other students came in returning things and borrowing more and I started trying to talk to them more like Mrs. Boutilier told me to. There was one girl who was a new student here that forgot her vest at school and she was asking me questions about the school and a few of the rules. Then a student that borrowed and returned a vest yesterday came in today to borrow another vest. He said he was new to the school, so I asked him if he got his vest yet and he said that it isn't supposed to come until the 20th. I told him not to worry about getting the vest back to me and that he could hold onto the vest until his came and he seemed pretty happy.
September 12th:
This week has been going well so far. These past few days Mrs. Shmitt has been running uniforms through the laundry for me and having her students bring them over to the library for me. I am so thankful for her doing that because it really helped me out. It feels really nice to know that someone in the school is looking out for you even when you don't ask them to.. Today I also asked Mrs. Williams to be my mentor and she agreed to do it. This also makes me happy because it means I can finally finish my proposal.
September 25th:
Today I lent out my last 2 ties. Their is about 4 students with ties out right now and I hope they bring them back in to me soon because we need them back and I would hate to have a student go to inside because I couldn’t give him a tie.
October 1st:
Today Mrs. Williams had two new students come in and one of them had gotten a vest that was two small for them so I swapped it out with a bigger one. I felt kind of bad though because he bought a brand new vest and the one I gave him was still really nice, it just wasn't that new. I also had another senior come in today looking for a tie. It was one of my friends and the last time he borrowed a tie it took him a while to give it back. I made him promise to give it to me at the end of the day. He gave it back as we were leaving for signout.
October 3rd:
Today I was talking to Mrs. Boutilier about the ties because I ran out of them completely and she said that I should call the advisory teachers of all the students with the ties. I called all the teachers on the list and, surprisingly, not a single one of them answered. This kind of discouraged me because I don't really understand how 4 out of 4 teachers did not answer the phone. Its alright though, I’ll just call them all again tomorrow.
October 9th:
Today has been an interesting morning. I had a student who came to me yesterday for a tie and when I asked him where his tie was he told me that he left it at home because it was too big for him. Today when he brought back the tie I gave him, he showed me his other tie and said that today he has the big tie. Then Mrs. Prescott who was walking in asked the boy if he knew how to tie a tie and he said yes and showed her, but when he ties it, the skinny end was way longer than the big end. I asked him if he wanted me to show him how to tie a tie without making it so big and he said yes. I showed him how high up to start the not and that if you wrap it around a few times, it makes the tie shorter. He looked at me amazed and said “I guess this tie isn't too big after all.” It felt really good to help that kid out even though it was such a simple thing I did, it made me feel good and I could tell it really made a difference for him by the way his eyes lit up.
November 7th:
This morning was a rough morning. I left my house a little bit earlier than normal thinking that I would be early to school. However, when I got closer to the highway, traffic was stopped due to an accident and I was just sitting there for about 20 minutes. It kind of frustrated me but I knew I was still going to be just on time. Then when I got onto I-91, traffic was stopped again due to another accident and it was right in the exit ramp I was supposed to get off. At this point I called Devin and asked him to cover for me in the library. I ended up getting to school about 30 minutes later than normal. I was really frustrated with the way this morning went because everything that had happened, I had no control over.
November 19th:
One of my biggest challenges is that ties always seem to never end up getting returned quickly, so I often find myself without any ties. I know Mr. Valacer has two ties in his room that he lends out to students, so when a student needs a tie and I don’t have one, I often send them to him. We have talked about it before and he told me Tyler had the same problem last year. Anyways, today in class he came up to me and gave me 4 brand new ties. (2 silver and 2 blue) He said he was getting ties and he thought of me so he got them. It means a lot to me that he got them for me without even asking and it really helped me out because now I have even more ties to give to students.
November 22nd:
Today was a very eventful day. We had the pep rally today and all the seniors dressed down with their senior shirts. Apparently, if you did not pay for spirit week, you were only allowed to wear your senior shirt and you had to wear khakis. Long story short, there were tons and tons of kids who needed khakis this morning and I basically spent all of the first block and most of the second block in the library handing out khakis to students.
November 28th:
There is a middle schooler who has borrowed a tie from me a few times throughout the year. The first time he borrowed a tie, he did not bring it back for like two weeks. Then the second time he borrowed one I talked to him and told him how I don’t have a lot of ties and how important it is that I get them right back. He brought that tie back the next day and now he does every time. Yesterday he borrowed a tie and brought it right back to me today. It’s crazy to see how much of a difference it makes just talking to people.
January 10th:
For some reason this past week had been really busy. I am not sure if its because everyone coming back from break lost their uniforms or what but nobody has had a vest or a tie at all .
February 3rd:
Since we don't have the capstone class anymore I have sort have been slacking. I just realized I have barely wrote anything down in my journal for the year of 2020. It is kind of nice to just do my capstone and be stress free now though. I feel like my mornings in the library are my new meditation times because most of the time it is just me in there and I get to relax , or catch up on work.
February 19th:
Lately I have noticed that I have been getting less and less vests back so I have been making sure to try and track down the people who do not return them. I always feel so bad whenever I don't have something that someone needs so I like to make sure I do.
March 17th:
So school has gotten closed for two weeks due to Corona virus. That sounds pretty nice as long as we don't have to make it up in the end of the year. I am going to try and work most of the days in these few weeks so I can make the best out of the situation.
March 29th:
It turns out, school is going to be closed for a lot longer than two weeks. Honestly I feel like there is a pretty good chance of us not going back at all. I have been able to work a lot lately which I am pretty grateful for but I miss school. I feel like I am missing the best part of my senior year, or maybe even all of high school and it kind of sucks. I just hope we get to go back soon so I can see everyone and all of my teachers one last time.
